1. The Marriage or Civil Union license shall be issued by the officer in the municipality in which either party resides and is valid in any municipality in the State of New Jersey OR if neither party is a resident of the State, the license must be obtained in the municipality which the proposed  Marriage or Civil Union is to be performed and the license is valid only in that municipality and must be marked as such.
2. The licenses are only good in the State of New Jersey.
3. Identification Requirements for Marriage Licenses: Birth Certificate or valid Passport, Social Security Card and valid Driver’s License or acceptable proof of residency. (One witness is needed at the time of application with identification. (Must be 18 years of age or older).
4. Identification Requirements for Civil Union License: Birth Certificate or valid Passport, Social Security Card and valid Driver’s License or acceptable proof of residency. (One witness is needed at the time of application with identification. (Must be 18 years of age or older).
5. There is a three (3) day waiting period from the day of application until the License can be issued.
6. A Marriage License or Civil Union License is valid for a period of thirty (30) days from the date it is issued.
7. If either party has been in a previous marriage proof of the divorce must be shown.
8. If either party is widowed they must bring in a copy of the death certificate.
9. Legal proof of the termination of a previous Domestic Partnership or Civil Union must be provided at the time of application, when applying for another Domestic Partnership or Civil Union.
10. Requirements for Domestic Partnerships: Must be 62 years of age or older and meet all other requirements for being deemed eligible to register a domestic partnership.
11. There is a fee of $28.00 cash only (exact change) for a Marriage License or Civil Union License.

For a Remarriage License the following items must be provided: proof of the original Marriage plus the items requested in #1, #3 and #11.  There is no waiting period for a Remarriage License.

For a Reaffirmation of a Civil Union the following items must be provide: proof of the original Civil Union plus the items requested in #1, #4 and #11. There is no waiting period for a Reaffirmation of a Civil Union.

Certified copies of Marriage Licenses, Civil Unions, Death Certificates, Births and Domestic Partnerships with the raised seal $10.00 per copy and must be obtained in the municipality where the event took place.

The hours for applying for the above are 9 am to 12 noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday – Friday with the exception of holidays.
