INFORMATION FOR MARRIAGE OR CIVIL UNION LICENSES
AND CERTIFIED COPIES
- The Marriage or Civil Union license shall be issued by the officer in the municipality in which either party resides and is valid in any municipality in the State of New Jersey. If neither party is a resident of the State, the license must be obtained in the municipality in which the proposed Marriage or Civil Union is to be performed. The license is valid only in that municipality and must be marked as such. The license is only valid in the State of New Jersey.
- The Marriage or Civil Union License application requires the date of your Marriage or Civil Union Ceremony and the name and address of the person performing the Ceremony.
- Identification Requirements for Marriage or Civil Union Licenses: Valid Photo Identification (Driver’s License) and acceptable proof of residency. (You must bring a witness with you at the time of application, the witness must have valid photo identification and be 18 years of age or older)
- Other Requested Documents for Marriage or Civil Union Licenses: Birth Certificate, valid Passport, Social Security Card, Divorce Decree, termination of previous Domestic Partnership or Civil Union.
- There is a seventy-two (72) hour waiting period from the date of application for the License to be issued. The Marriage or Civil Union License is valid for a period of thirty (30) days.
- Requirements for Domestic Partnerships: Both applicants must be 62 years of age or older and meet all other requirements to register a domestic partnership.
- There is a fee of $28.00 cash fee (exact change) for a Marriage or Civil Union License.
- Remarriage Licenses requirements: proof of the original Marriage and the items listed in #1, #2, #3 and #7. There is no waiting period for a Remarriage License.
- Reaffirmation of Civil Union requirements: proof of the original Civil Union and the items listed in #1, #2, #3 and #7. There is no waiting period for a Reaffirmation of a Civil Union.
- Certified copies of Marriage, Civil Union, Death, Birth and Domestic Partnerships, with the raised seal, are $20.00 per copy (payable to Township of Piscataway) and must be obtained in the municipality where the event took place. Valid Photo Identification and proof of relationship must be provided for Certified Copies of Vital Records.
- Office hours, for all applications listed above, are 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday – Friday.
