Recreation Programs and Activities - Spring

PICNIC RESERVATIONS:
Riverside and Possumtown Parks are available to Piscataway residents and civic organizations and businesses based in Piscataway from May 5, 2008 through September 14, 2008. All picnic requests must be made in person in the Recreation Office two weeks before the actual date of the picnic. Documentation verifying Piscataway residency is required. Contact the Recreation Office to obtain a reservation request form and fee information.
YOUTH BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL:
Registration for the spring youth baseball and softball leagues listed below will be accepted from February 11, 2008 through February 29, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and also on the evening of Thursday, February 28, 2008 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All players, both new and returning, must register. All registration forms must be accompanied by the Model Code of Conduct form, which must be signed by both parents.
· Instructional Baseball League:
Piscataway boys and girls seven and eight years of age are welcome. Players must turn seven before May 1, 2008 and cannot turn nine until after April 30, 2008. All players who sign up will be placed on a team by the Recreation Office. Parents/Guardians must bring the child’s birth certificate to registration.
· Junior Baseball League:
Piscataway residents ages 13, 14, and 15 are eligible. Players must turn 13 before May 1, 2008 and cannot turn 16 until after April 30, 2008. The league will be comprised of one division in which 13, 14, and 15 year olds will compete together. All players must register in the Recreation Office no later than 4:00 p.m. on February 29, 2008. Birth certificates must be provided at the time of registration. Copies are acceptable. All players regardless of skill level will be placed on teams according to a player draft. Mandatory tryouts will be held in late March 2008. Dates and times for tryouts will be provided at registration.
· Junior American Legion Baseball:
Piscataway Recreation will sponsor a team in the Middlesex County Junior American Legion Baseball League. Players must be 17 years of age or younger. Players born before January 1, 1991 are too old. The league plays a 20 game schedule in June and July. Call the Recreation Office for more registration and tryout information.
· Girls Softball Leagues:
Piscataway girls in grades 2 through 8 are eligible. There will be three separate leagues; an instructional slo-pitch league for grades 2 and 3, a slo-pitch league for grades 4 and 5 and a modified pitch for grades 6, 7, and 8. There are no tryouts for this program. Girls will be placed on teams by the Recreation Department. Girls electing to play in this program are not eligible to participate in the girls fast pitch league.
· Girls Fast-Pitch Softball
Piscataway will enter a team(s) in the Somerville Inter-town Fast Pitch Softball League for girls in grades 6, 7, and 8. Home and away games will be played against teams from surrounding communities on Tuesday and Thursday evenings this spring. Tryouts will be held and 12 girls will be chosen for the team(s) by the team manager(s). Girls selected to participate in this program are not eligible to participate in the girls modified pitch softball league. Tryouts will be announced at a later date.
ADULT SOFTBALL:
Adult Industrial Softball League sign ups are open to residents eighteen years and older. All players must live or work in Piscataway. The deadline for submitting a team roster, entry fee, and refundable bond is Friday, February 15, 2008.
· Men’s Slo-Pitch Industrial Softball League:
Men’s slo-pitch games will be played Monday through Thursday nights. To register you must submit entry forms, a $325.00 entry fee, and a $100.00 refundable bond no later than the February 15th deadline. New teams are not guaranteed entry into the league.
· Women’s Slo-Pitch Industrial Softball League:
Women’s slo-pitch games will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. To register you must submit entry forms, a $325.00 entry fee, and a $100.00 refundable bond no later than the February 15th deadline.
· Over “35” Men’s Slo-Pitch Industrial Softball League:
Piscataway residents over 35 years of age as of January 1, 2008 are welcome. A very relaxed, low-key league will be played on Friday evenings. The deadline for submitting a team roster and $375.00 entry fee is Monday, March 31, 2008. New teams are not guaranteed entry into the league.
SPRING Tennis Instructions:
· Teenagers:
Piscataway township residents thirteen years old to seventeen years old are welcome. There will be two classes, intermediate and beginners with a limit of fifteen registrants per class. There is no charge. Those interested in participating must register in person in the Recreation Office by Monday, March 31, 2008.
· Adults:
Piscataway township residents eighteen years and older are welcome. A class will be held for beginners that have never participated in tennis before or have only minimal experience. Class will be limited to fifteen registrants. A $30.00 fee will be charged for this program. Those interested in participating must register in the Recreation Office by Monday, March 31, 2008.
TENNIS COURT RESERVATION SYSTEM:
Between April and November, Township residents 18 or older can reserve a tennis court at Columbus Park for one hour per day Monday through Friday, for play between 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (Court reservations are not required for weekends and all other weekday hours, and operate on a first come, first serve basis.)
Court reservations will begin on Monday, March 17, 2008. In order to make court reservations you must first register in person with Piscataway Recreation to obtain a “tennis Identification Card”. Proof of Piscataway residency is required at registration. There is no charge for the I. D. card, or to reserve a court.
After obtaining a tennis reservation I. D. card, registrations can be made by calling the Recreation Office between Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 732-562-2382.
In 2008 we will be updating our tennis reservations system and issuing new “identification cards”. All current, existing card holders will be required to come to the recreation office at 455 Hoes Lane to re-register and obtain their new identification card. Please provide documentation verifying Piscataway residency at time of registration.
POP WARNER REGISTRATION:
· Football:
For residents ages seven through fifteen years. Age and weight requirements are set by the National Pop Warner. Players must turn seven before August 1, 2008 and cannot turn fifteen until after July 31, 2008. Registration will be held in the Municipal Building on WEDNESDAY ONLY, June 4, 2008 between 7:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Players must register before being eligible to practice. Birth certificates and accurate body weight must be provided when registering. Space is limited to 35 players per squad. · Cheering
For girls who turn seven before August 1, 2008, and do not turn fifteen until after July 31, 2008. Registration will be held on, WEDNESDAY ONLY, June 4, 2008 in the Municipal Building, between 7:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Space is limited. PICNIC BAGS & EQUIPMENT LOAN:
Loan of equipment for Piscataway residents or employee group or family outings are available. Horseshoes, Frisbee, Volleyball, Softball, and Wiffle Ball equipment are available for loan. A $25.00 CASH deposit is required. Also available for loan, is a tug-of-war rope. A $25.00 CASH deposit is required for the rope as well. All deposits are refundable upon return of the loaned equipment.
Open Gym Program:
The open gym program is held at Piscataway High School and is open Monday and Wednesday evenings. For further information, please call the Recreation Office.
4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION AND DISPLAY:
The annual 4th of July celebration and fireworks display will be held on Friday, July 4, 2008. The fireworks display will be at 9:00 p.m. at the Piscataway High School football stadium. There will be clowns, kiddy rides, music, food, and a classic car show beginning at 7:00 p.m. The 4th of July activities are sponsored by the Recreation Department and corporate donations. The rain date is Saturday, July 5, 2008.
Adult Walking and Jogging Club:
A program open to all residents age 18 and older. Designed to coordinate adults interested in walking and jogging within a club and group atmosphere at the bike path on Sidney Road which surrounds the baseball and soccer fields at Green Acres. Registration will be accepted Monday through Friday beginning March 31, 2008. All residents are required to register including those that were members last year. Deadline for accepting registrations is Friday, April 25, 2008. Program will begin on Tuesday, April 30, 2008.
MARTIAL ARTS:
The Piscataway Recreation Department is sponsoring Martial Arts classes on Tuesdays and Fridays beginning Tuesday, September 9, 2008. Residents’ ages 11 and up are welcomed. Classes will be held at Conackamack Middle School from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Space is limited. Please call the Recreation Office for additional information.
SUMMER TRACK PROGRAM:
Informal club activity for male and female athletes ages 6 through adults. Participation in statewide meets. Program will start the last week of June and run through mid August. Please call the Recreation Office for additional information.
PISCATAWAY YOUTH CENTER:
Located at 211 Lakeview Avenue. Open to YOUTHS in Middle School and High School up to age 16. For information regarding programs and hours of operation, contact the Youth Center at (732) 752-2701. Proof of residence required. Adult volunteers needed to staff the center.
Recreation Programs for Children and Adults with Special Needs:
Piscataway Township is a participating member of the Middlesex County Association for Retarded Citizens. Middlesex County ARC provides year-round activities for children and adults with disabilities within Middlesex County. For registration information, please call the Recreation Office.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
· Participants in Piscataway Recreation sponsored events do so at their own risk and accept responsibility for all their actions and injuries incurred by their participation. Prior to submitting a claim to the Township, injured parties must first use their own medical/accident insurance as their primary coverage. The insurance offered by Piscataway Township is supplemental and secondary only. If a claim qualifies for consideration, the Township insurance is limited to a maximum payout of no more than $5,000.00 per accident.
- It is now mandatory in New Jersey for all school aged youth that wear corrective eyewear while participating in recreation programs and activities to wear “Protective Eyewear” that meets (ASTM) American Society for Testing and Materials standards for frames, and (ANSI) American National Standards Institute standards for lenses.
· For use of Township facilities, parks, ball fields and courts, a certificate of insurance and a hold harmless agreement are required.
